Just before Christmas last year, we made the decision that we would like a second dog. Having 2 small children (1 and 3 years old at the time), and a 4 year old female labrador, we were very anxious that the new addition would be a perfect ‘fit’ for our family. At the early stages, we were hesitant to explore ‘rescue’ dogs as we were worried that the dogs background and temperament might not be fully understood and this could pose a safety concern for us with our young children. When we did contact Cara, they couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. We explained exactly what we wanted and Lorna suggested ‘Bruno’ as a possible match. (Bruno was a 1.5-2 year old collie cross who had been knocked down and despite much rehabilitation, the Vets were unable to save his front leg. It didn’t stop him though, he lived life to the fullest) Lorna arranged for a home visit to take place and for Bruno (now known as Harvey) to come out with the Cara volunteers. The girls who came to do the home visit were fostering Bruno and had a great knowledge of his temperament, activity level etc. which put us at ease greatly. It was great to see Bruno in our home setting and how he interacted with the boys and our own dog. We decided very quickly that Bruno was the dog for us.
Over the following weeks, Cara were at the other end of the phone to answer every question we had and to give us advice in getting Bruno, who at this stage was very much ‘Harvey’, settled into our home. A couple of months later when a further issue arose, Cara once again stepped in to give us all the help we needed. I couldn’t recommend the super people in Cara highly enough. Not only do they do amazing work in rescuing and rehoming, but they are with you every step of the way. Because they operate a foster home system instead of a ‘rescue centre’ they get to know the dogs really well and therefore find the best dog for your needs.
